Starting November 20th, Airbnb is implementing a new policy that restricts the types of checkout chores hosts can demand from guests. The company now prohibits requests that require significant time or effort, or tasks typically handled by professional cleaning services.
Under the updated guidelines, guests are no longer required to wash dishes, strip beds, start laundry, or remove trash from the property. Hosts may still ask guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather towels, or separate trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.
The platform is introducing a new section on listings titled Rules and Requests to display host requirements more clearly. If a host includes chore requests, the listing will feature an Includes Cleaning Requests warning to inform potential guests before they book.
Hosts are prohibited from adding extra requirements via private messages or physical signs at the property. While some hosts have expressed concerns regarding health risks and property management, Airbnb allows specific exceptions, such as disposing of trash in bear-proof containers.
