A recent study analyzed inpatient billing data from hospitals and medical facilities associated with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. The organization represents 31 independent insurers providing coverage to over 100 million people in the United States.
Data indicates that between 2024 and 2025, healthcare providers billed for secondary conditions more frequently. This shift resulted in $653 million in additional costs for Blue Cross companies. Total expenses related to more intensive care rose by $942 million over the two-year period compared to 2023 levels.
The research highlights a significant increase in specific secondary conditions for major bowel surgeries between the first quarter of 2023 and the fourth quarter of 2025. Documented cases included partial intestinal blockages and elevated body acid levels.
BCBSA senior vice president Luke Chalker noted that the rise in coded conditions does not automatically imply misuse of technology. However, insurers like Centene have expressed concerns that AI-assisted tools may lead to aggressive or inappropriate reimbursement requests.
