The indie game Teach My Little Sister How To Drive, developed by Easy Fox, has faced unexpected financial challenges due to a sudden surge in player interest. The game functions as a chaotic driving simulator where players guide a character using only voice commands processed by artificial intelligence.
The developers utilize Google Gemini for voice recognition and response generation, with ChatGPT serving as a backup system. Following a 20-fold increase in the player base, the studio reported daily costs for API tokens reaching $1000. To cover these expenses, the team was forced to take out a loan.
To manage costs, the studio temporarily switched to the less powerful ChatGPT Realtime Mini 2.1 model, which resulted in latency issues and incorrect in-game actions. The developers plan to integrate local AI models for users with high-performance hardware to reduce reliance on external services.
Looking ahead, the creators intend to incorporate the ongoing AI operational costs into the final retail price of the game. This strategy aims to ensure that future players will not be affected by the expenses associated with the AI-driven mechanics.
