The developers of a voice-controlled game demo, Easy Fox, report daily AI service costs exceeding $1,000. To maintain the demo's availability amid rising player counts, the studio secured a bank loan. The game relies on AI to process voice commands and generate responses for in-game interactions.
Player engagement for the demo grew significantly, reaching a peak of 431 concurrent users on October 1. The surge in traffic caused the project to hit usage limits on Google Gemini, forcing a transition to the ChatGPT Realtime Mini 2.1 model. This switch resulted in performance issues, including input errors and response delays.
To mitigate cloud dependency and costs, the studio plans to implement local AI models for users with suitable hardware. Developers intend to incorporate expected AI usage expenses into the final game price, ensuring no additional token-based charges for players after purchase. The team is also exploring alternative models for regions with restricted access to Western AI services.
