Adobe has introduced an Open Eyes feature for the Lightroom mobile app, designed to fix closed eyes in portraits. The tool detects closed eyes and uses generative AI to open them, supporting both individual portraits and group photos.

The system can reference other photos of the same person in the library to match eye color, shape, and size. Adobe states the tool focuses only on the eye area without altering other facial features. The feature is available on iOS, iPadOS, and Android.

While Adobe claims the feature is free, users report that free accounts are limited to two uses before prompting for a subscription. Additional generative AI credits are available through Adobe Creative Cloud or specific AI plans.

Unlike older methods in Photoshop Elements that copy and paste eyes, this tool uses generative AI to better match lighting and posture. Media testing suggests the tool may utilize Google's Nano Banana model, though Adobe has not confirmed this.

Alongside Open Eyes, Adobe added Generative Expand to the mobile app. This feature allows users to extend the edges of photos using AI, which helps in adjusting compositions or fitting different social media aspect ratios.
