Venture capital firm a16z has removed the word crypto from its fund name, signaling a strategic shift toward broader investments in artificial intelligence and frontier technologies. Despite the rebranding, the firm confirmed it will maintain its commitment to the blockchain sector and continue advocating for industry regulation.
General partner Chris Dixon stated that the firm aims to define companies by their functional output rather than underlying technology. He noted that blockchain infrastructure is increasingly integrated into mainstream fintech and Wall Street products, making specific industry labels less relevant for modern startups.
The firm plans to focus on long-term investments, including autonomous machines, biological advancements, and medicine. Dixon highlighted the potential for crypto to provide economic capabilities for AI agents, enabling machine-to-machine transactions and new network bootstrapping methods.
The new fund will be managed by Chris Dixon alongside founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, as well as partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. While the size of the renamed fund was not disclosed, the firm previously announced a $2,2 billion fund in May.
