The Zakura node software team aims to implement post-quantum signature support for Zcash by January. This initiative focuses on introducing opcodes for hash-based signatures, which utilize a mathematical foundation independent of the elliptic-curve cryptography currently vulnerable to quantum computing threats.
The initial phase targets transparent transactions, which account for approximately 70% of all issued ZEC. This priority is driven by the need to secure the largest portion of the network's supply. However, January remains a development target rather than a confirmed activation date, as network upgrades require extensive testing and coordination.
Shielded transactions will require separate, more complex engineering efforts due to their distinct cryptographic architecture. The current push follows warnings from researcher Justin Drake regarding AI-accelerated threats, which previously caused a market decline of approximately 11% in ZEC value.
Zcash has previously integrated quantum-recoverable Ironwood notes during the July 2026 NU6.3 upgrade. Additionally, Shielded Labs initiated the Epoch project on October 1, 2026, which aims to deliver production-ready post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2027.
