A proposal submitted on October 15 suggests allowing the creation of XRP Ledger accounts with a zero balance. Under this model, a sponsor would cover the mandatory base reserve of 1 XRP, along with 0.2 XRP for each owned item, while the user retains full control over the account keys.
The mechanism relies on a new SponsoredAccountCreate transaction that establishes a sponsorship object for the account. This approach aims to simplify the user onboarding process for applications, as it removes the requirement to pre-fund individual wallets during account setup.
The implementation is currently gated behind the SponsorV1_1 code, which is part of a broader framework for sponsored fees and reserves that is not yet active on the mainnet. The proposal is currently under review by the network participants.
As of October 28, 10 out of 35 trusted validators have cast their votes in favor of the amendment. For the proposal to be adopted, it must secure more than 80% support from the network validators and maintain that level of consensus for a period of two weeks.
