Humanoid robots developed by the Beijing-based X-Humanoid center set a new speed record during the World Robot Games held in China this August. The TianGong Ultra model completed the 100-meter sprint in 8.64 seconds, surpassing the world record held by Usain Bolt.
The development team achieved these results by refining AI-based control software tailored to each individual robot prototype. The TianGong Ultra reached a top speed of 17 meters per second. Due to the high speed and a mass of 75 kilograms, the robots required a soft mat at the finish line for braking.
The competition process involved multiple prototypes, as the robots frequently sustained damage to their limbs during training sessions. The software optimization was conducted in stages, with the robot's time improving from 9.39 seconds in the preliminary heat to 8.86 seconds in the semifinals.
Future development at X-Humanoid will focus on reducing the weight of the robots and improving their braking systems. The center plans to deploy these machines for industrial inspections, search and rescue operations, and logistics, provided that the team can ensure long-term mechanical reliability.
