Phoronix conducted a comparative performance analysis of Hyper-Threading and SMT technologies on workstation processors. The study focused on the Intel Xeon 678X Granite Rapids WS and the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X.

The Intel Xeon 678X was tested in its default configuration of 48 cores and 96 threads, as well as with Hyper-Threading disabled. The testing platform for this processor was the HP Z4 G6i workstation.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X was evaluated in its standard 64-core, 128-thread setup, and with SMT disabled. Researchers also tested the 9980X with 48 cores enabled to match the core count of the Intel Xeon 678X.

The evaluation included monitoring CPU power consumption and thermal performance. All tests were performed on the Fedora Workstation 44 operating system, utilizing the Linux 7.1 kernel and the GCC 16.2 compiler.
