Microsoft is currently developing an automated theme switching feature for Windows 11, as indicated by new strings discovered in the latest preview build. This functionality aims to transition the system interface between light and dark modes based on user-defined schedules or local sunrise and sunset times.

The upcoming feature includes a specific setting to prevent automatic theme changes while the computer is in use. The system will detect if the device is idle before applying the scheduled transition, ensuring that users are not interrupted during work sessions or meetings by sudden interface adjustments.

While dark mode has been available since Windows 10, the operating system previously lacked a native automated switching mechanism. Users were previously forced to toggle modes manually or rely on third-party software to achieve this functionality, which is now becoming a standard feature in the Windows 11 ecosystem.
