Microsoft is preparing to introduce an automatic theme switching feature for Windows 11. The functionality, which allows the system to toggle between light and dark modes, was identified by user @phantomofearth in a recent experimental build of the operating system.
The discovery includes new text strings and a dedicated system file, Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll, located in the System32 directory. This suggests that the feature will soon be available to participants of the Windows Insider Preview program.
Users will likely be able to schedule theme changes based on geolocation data. If location services are disabled, the system will rely on a user-defined time schedule. To avoid interruptions, the mode will only switch when the computer is idle.
