Microsoft has officially acknowledged that the September security update, identified as KB5124008, causes audio malfunctions on certain Windows 11 systems. The issue specifically impacts devices utilizing the USB Audio Class 1.0 standard.
Users experiencing the error report various symptoms, including unresponsive volume controls, missing audio output, and the inability of the system to detect hardware. The Device Manager may display a Code 10 error, indicating that the device failed to start.
The company notes that some affected USB audio devices may still function if configured for standard 2-channel stereo output. However, attempting to switch to multichannel modes, such as 8-channel or 3D audio, often leads to a complete failure of the device.
Microsoft has stated that the severity of the issue varies depending on the specific hardware and usage scenario. While the company is currently working on a permanent resolution, no official fix has been released to address the update's impact on audio drivers.
