Microsoft has introduced support for Intel Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) in the latest Windows 11 insider build 29695. The update includes a toggle that allows users to enable APX, signaling that the operating system is now prepared for the upcoming hardware integration.

Intel designed APX as an extension to the x86-64 instruction set architecture. The technology doubles the number of general-purpose registers from 16 to 32. According to Intel, this architecture allows for approximately 10% fewer instructions in compiled code, which improves overall task efficiency and frees up CPU cycles.

Despite the software readiness, there are currently no consumer PCs on the market that support APX. The technology is scheduled to debut alongside Intel's Nova Lake processors, which are expected to launch in early 2027. Development continues to ensure full feature compatibility by the time the chips reach retailers.
