Waymo has released a safety performance update for its autonomous robotaxi service, covering operations through the end of June 2026. The company reports that its vehicles have completed over 270 million miles of fully autonomous driving across five major metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

The data indicates that the Waymo Driver has helped avoid injuries to at least 841 people. This figure represents an 82% reduction in injury-causing crashes compared to human driver benchmarks. For more severe collisions, the company reports a 95% reduction, which is equivalent to 20 times fewer serious injury incidents than those involving human drivers.

The number of avoided injuries has increased significantly from 544 reported in December. Waymo also highlighted specific safety improvements for vulnerable road users. The system reduced injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians by 93%, cyclists by 86%, and motorcyclists by 82%. The company states it has logged over 300 human lifetimes of driving experience.

Before deployment on public roads, the Waymo Driver undergoes a formal safety review process. The company has published its full data and methodology, including the acceptance criteria used to evaluate the readiness of its autonomous technology for public service.
