Walmart has launched a proprietary agent gateway to facilitate AI-driven e-commerce transactions. This new MCP server allows verified AI agents to connect to the platform via the Model Context Protocol, enabling them to check inventory and place orders on behalf of users. The technology is available for both Walmart and Sam's Club stores.
The system includes security features that prevent AI agents from accessing personal payment information. Instead, agents only receive data necessary to complete specific tasks. Users can manage agent permissions through a new profile system, which allows for setting individual spending limits or requiring manual approval for every transaction.
Walmart has introduced specific terms of service for AI agents, outlining operational standards and access rights. The company confirmed that its standard return policy applies to all orders, including those placed by AI agents, to protect consumers from potential errors. Agents that fail to comply with these regulations will be blocked from the platform.
The agent profile feature will launch next month, allowing users to link specific AI agents to their accounts. Users can monitor orders generated by each agent and delete profiles at any time. These features are accessible to all Walmart account holders without requiring a Walmart+ subscription.
