Volkswagen's partnership with Xpeng, initiated in July 2023 with a 5 per cent equity stake, has faced significant challenges in the Chinese market. The first jointly developed model, the ID.UNYX 08, launched in April 2026, sold only 1,300 units between April and August. This figure represents just 7.4 per cent of the company's monthly sales target of 3,622 vehicles.
The low sales volume is attributed to a limited distribution network. While Volkswagen operates over 3,000 dealerships with partners FAW and SAIC, the ID.UNYX 08 is primarily sold through Volkswagen Anhui, which currently manages only 166 outlets. The company plans to expand sales points through its partnership with FAW to address this gap.
Market competitiveness remains a hurdle, as the ID.UNYX 08 faces pressure from local rivals like the Xiaomi YU7 and Zeekr 7X, which offer more advanced features at similar price points. Despite an initial launch price of ¥229 900, Volkswagen has been offering a 17 per cent discount on the model for several weeks to stimulate demand.
Before finalizing the Xpeng deal, Volkswagen explored collaborations with other Chinese manufacturers. In 2022, the company attempted to partner with BYD to utilize its Dolphin platform for the Jetta sub-brand and also held negotiations with Leapmotor. Both attempts were unsuccessful, with Leapmotor eventually partnering with Stellantis.
Volkswagen's overall performance in China has declined, with total sales across all drivetrains dropping 25.9 per cent to 973 000 vehicles in the first half of 2026. Electric vehicle sales saw a sharper decline of 47.9 per cent, totaling 30 900 units. The company is now implementing price cuts and updates for its older ID.UNYX 06 and 07 models.
