Volkswagen has initiated a global recall for 72,668 electric vehicles due to a battery supplier defect. The issue involves battery cells that fail to meet specifications, which could potentially trigger thermal propagation or fires when charged above 80% capacity.

The recall covers specific batches of ID. Buzz, ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 models manufactured between 2022 and 2025, alongside Cupra Born vehicles from 2022 to 2024. In Germany alone, 9,881 units are affected, while 22,524 ID.4 SUVs are impacted in the US.

To mitigate risks, the company is limiting the maximum charging capacity of these vehicles to 80%. For US owners, this update is being deployed remotely, with completion expected around October 27, 2026. Volkswagen is currently developing a permanent remedy.

Official notification letters for owners are scheduled for mailing on November 27, 2026. Customers can reach out to Volkswagen support using the recall code 93EX, or contact the NHTSA regarding campaign number 26V630.
