Volkswagen is launching a new organizational unit named OneTeam to centralize the development of driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technologies. The unit is scheduled to begin operations in November.
Manuel Birke, currently the head of driver assistance technology at the software subsidiary Cariad, will lead OneTeam. He will report directly to Rouven Mohr, a member of the Audi development board, placing Audi in charge of group-wide ADAS development.
The restructuring aims to accelerate development cycles and establish a unified technology platform across all Volkswagen Group brands. This move follows past software delays, such as those affecting the Audi Q6 e-tron launch.
Cariad recently terminated its partnership with Bosch on automated driving functions in July and is currently cutting approximately 1,000 jobs in Germany. The group is now exploring new collaborations, including potential work with the British AI startup Wayve for higher-level automation.
Volkswagen continues to integrate external hardware and software solutions. The company showcased the autonomous ID. Buzz AD, which utilizes the Nvidia Hyperion platform, and is collaborating with Nvidia, Microsoft Azure, and Voxel51 to develop a data platform for training automated driving systems.
