Mercedes-Benz has extended its strategic partnership with Nvidia to accelerate the development of Level 4 autonomous driving systems. The collaboration integrates the automaker's MB.OS platform with Nvidia's advanced hardware and software, aiming to deploy fully autonomous vehicles and specialized robotaxis.

The project utilizes Nvidia's Hyperion architecture and Drive AGX compute platform, incorporating the Alpamayo family of open VLA models. These models enable reasoning-based autonomy, allowing the system to provide explanations for its driving decisions. Additionally, the setup includes Nvidia Halos to establish a redundant safety stack.

This shift marks a change in strategy for the German manufacturer. While the company previously received approval for a Level 3 system in Europe for EQS and S-Class models, it recently decided to discontinue this feature due to high development costs associated with LiDAR technology. The brand now intends to transition directly from its current Level 2++ system to Level 4 capabilities.
