Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that artificial intelligence could potentially break current encryption methods within the next two years. He suggests that the industry must prepare for both quantum-vulnerable and AI-vulnerable cryptography, as AI advancements might accelerate mathematical breakthroughs.
Researcher Justin Drake from the Ethereum Foundation recently proposed a shift to bunker mode. This strategy involves moving funds to addresses where public keys remain unexposed. Drake argues that AI-driven mathematical progress could compromise security even before the arrival of powerful quantum computers, often called Q-Day.
The security of lattice-based cryptography, which some projects like Cardano consider for quantum resistance, may be at risk from AI-enhanced math. Buterin suggests that lattice sizes should be increased to bolster security, though he notes that even hash-based cryptography could theoretically be vulnerable to AI-driven analysis.
Despite these warnings, Buterin does not recommend immediate panic or rushing to move funds. He advises users to keep assets in addresses that have not yet performed transactions, as this prevents public key exposure. Industry experts like Ananda Banerjee also emphasize careful preparation over impulsive actions.
