Valve is reportedly developing a new iteration of its Steam Frame headset, internally codenamed Plano. According to findings in the kernel source code, this upcoming device is expected to feature an OLED display panel, marking a significant shift from the LCD technology used in the current model.
The technical specifications indicate a per-eye resolution of 3552x3840. While the native resolution is high, the source code suggests that Valve might cap the default output at 1776x1920 to optimize performance. The display is slated for a 90Hz refresh rate, with an experimental 120Hz overclocking mode available.
For comparison, the existing Steam Frame headset offers a per-eye resolution of 2160x2160 with a refresh rate ranging from 72Hz to 120Hz, plus a 144Hz overclocking option. The company previously followed a similar upgrade path with the Steam Deck, which received an OLED version nearly two years after the initial LCD release.
Market analysts suggest that an official launch for the Plano headset may not occur until 2028 or 2029. This delay is attributed to the current production backlog for the existing hardware, with some delivery schedules already extending into 2027.
