US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed concerns regarding a potential AI market bubble during a private event in New York on October 21. Speaking to an audience of financial executives and investors, he stated that he sees no systemic issues within the current AI sector.
The event was co-hosted by JPMorgan and the Robin Hood Foundation, with ticket prices starting at $7,500. During a 30-minute interview with Bridgewater Associates CEO Nir Bar Dea, Bessent emphasized that he is experienced in identifying systemic failures and currently finds none in the AI industry.
Bessent acknowledged that some investors worry about high valuations of AI stocks and the debt levels companies incur to fund data centers and chip purchases. However, he remains optimistic about the economic benefits of AI, noting that the sector is backed by highly successful entrepreneurs and investors.
The Treasury Secretary noted that AI firms and data center operators have struggled to communicate the practical advantages of their technology to the general public. He contrasted the current AI landscape with the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s, specifically referencing the failure of Pets.com.
