Universal Music Group has entered a strategic partnership with AI startup ElevenLabs to develop commercial licensing models and creative audio tools. The collaboration focuses on integrating AI voice synthesis while ensuring strict legal protection for artists' copyrights, likeness rights, and vocal assets.
ElevenLabs will provide custom solutions for UMG, including multilingual voice models that allow artists to release content in different languages using their own digital voices. These tools will support music production, audiobooks, podcasts, and radio broadcasts, as well as the creation of official 'Voice Twins' for gaming and metaverse applications.
The partnership also includes technical cooperation on acoustic restoration and noise reduction for historical audio archives. Both companies are committed to using neural audio algorithms to digitize and reconstruct early recordings from UMG's extensive catalog.
To prevent unauthorized use, the companies will jointly develop digital watermarking and asset tracking technologies. ElevenLabs will embed encrypted, non-removable audio watermarks into all generated content featuring UMG artists, enabling third-party platforms and regulators to verify official authorization.
This agreement marks a shift in UMG's strategy from litigation against generative AI to a model of controlled commercialization. The initiative aims to establish a framework for fair revenue sharing and artist rights, creating new royalty streams for UMG's roster while curbing illegal deepfake production.
