The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in the UK has launched an investigation into a senior officer from the Derbyshire Constabulary. The probe, initiated in August, follows a report submitted by the police force on June 23 regarding potential gross misconduct.
The officer is accused of using Microsoft Copilot for critical tasks beyond its authorized scope, including policy development, risk assessment, and providing justifications for decisions in criminal cases. Allegations also state that the officer input sensitive case information and personal data into the AI system.
The Derbyshire Constabulary authorized the use of Microsoft Copilot in May 2025 for administrative tasks like report writing and document summarization. However, the department explicitly prohibited the input of operational data, sensitive information, or personal details into the tool.
IOPC official Emily Barry stated that the allegations are serious and require a thorough, independent review. Investigators are examining the officer's use of the AI tool between May 2025 and June 2026 to determine if professional policing standards were breached.
