The UK economy grew by 0.4% in July, exceeding initial expectations of zero growth. This expansion drove the year-on-year growth rate to 1.6%, surpassing the projected 1.2% and marking the strongest annual performance since February 2025.

During the first half of 2026, the UK GDP expanded by 1%, positioning Britain as the fastest-growing economy within the G7. The country has nearly reached the Bank of England's full-year growth forecast of 1.1% with five months remaining in the year.

Growth was primarily driven by the IT, computer programming, and artificial intelligence sectors. The Office for National Statistics identified AI integration in software development as a significant contributor to the monthly performance.

The British pound rose by 0.1% following the data release. Analysts suggest that the stronger-than-expected economic performance may influence the Bank of England to adopt a more hawkish stance regarding future interest rate decisions.
