Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the U.S. is prepared to engage in talks with China regarding shared artificial intelligence risks. These discussions are scheduled for the upcoming weekend and aim to prevent the bifurcation of the two nations' technological systems.
The dialogue is expected to address both open and closed weight models. According to reports, Bessent is set to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng this week, while President Donald Trump plans to hold a meeting with President Xi Jinping next week.
Meanwhile, Silicon Valley is debating the pace of AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently proposed slowing down the release of new models to manage safety risks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also indicated that his company is considering a similar development slowdown.
Industry leaders, including Demis Hassabis, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, have expressed support for the idea of pacing frontier AI development. Additionally, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have been collaborating for several weeks to address safety concerns.
