Director Tsui Hark discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on the perception of reality during the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon. Speaking at a masterclass on October 12, he noted that AI is increasingly blurring the lines between actual events and illusions.
Tsui Hark highlighted that the integration of AI into cultural sectors makes it difficult for audiences to verify the authenticity of content. He pointed out that the combination of advertising, internet platforms, and AI accelerates information dissemination, complicating the ability to trace sources.
The director expressed concern regarding the uncertainty introduced by AI, as images, videos, and text can now be easily generated or manipulated. This environment makes it challenging for viewers to determine if the content they consume reflects genuine occurrences.
Furthermore, Tsui Hark linked AI to issues of identity, suggesting that the technology influences how individuals perceive themselves and the world. The Lumiere Film Festival is currently hosting a retrospective featuring four of his classic films.
