Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council has signaled that the Tainan Science Park is the likely location for TSMC's future 1nm chip production facility. Minister Wu Cheng-wen indicated that the government plans to develop new park infrastructure to support the land, water, and supply chain requirements necessary for 1nm manufacturing.
Development of the new site is expected to commence in 2027. This timeline aligns with TSMC's broader strategy for advanced nodes, as the company is currently preparing for its 1.4nm (A14) process. TSMC is already establishing A14 production capacity at the Central Taiwan Science Park, with mass production scheduled for 2028.
Supply chain reports suggest that TSMC may accelerate the A14 schedule, potentially starting risk production as early as the second half of 2027, with some preparations possibly beginning in October 2027. The A14 process is positioned as a critical platform for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and data center applications.
Beyond semiconductor manufacturing, the government is focusing on robotics and optical communications to bolster industrial competitiveness. Minister Wu emphasized that high-speed optical communication technology is essential for managing the massive data transmission demands driven by the rapid growth of the global artificial intelligence sector.
