TSMC and the Elon Musk-backed project Terafab are currently in discussions regarding a potential partnership to manufacture semiconductors. These chips would be intended for use by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Musk confirmed the ongoing negotiations, noting that while no final agreements have been reached, the talks remain active.
One proposed model involves TSMC building, owning, and operating a dedicated facility. Under this arrangement, SpaceX or Terafab would provide investment and guarantee purchase volumes. This structure aligns with TSMC's existing international projects, such as JASM in Japan and ESMC in Germany, where local partners provide funding and demand while TSMC manages operations.
Alternatively, the parties are considering a scenario where Musk's companies retain control of the facility. In this case, SpaceX would act as the primary owner, with TSMC supplying the necessary manufacturing technology and expertise. This approach would represent a departure from the standard operating model for the contract manufacturer.
The discussions may also align with TSMC's broader plans to expand its production footprint in Texas. Furthermore, the potential involvement of TSMC raises questions regarding the previously announced collaboration between Terafab and Intel. Beyond wafer production, TSMC could also provide advanced semiconductor packaging services for the project.
Terafab is designed as a proprietary semiconductor infrastructure for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The project aims to address the rising demand for computing power across Musk's ventures, including artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, robotics, and space systems.
