Donald Trump recently proposed renaming artificial intelligence, arguing the current term lacks precision and elegance. He suggested three alternatives: Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, or Supreme Intelligence. The president initiated a poll on social media featuring these options, where Superior Intelligence currently leads with 41% of the votes.
The term artificial intelligence was coined by John McCarthy in 1955. It first appeared in a proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, submitted by McCarthy alongside Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon to the Rockefeller Foundation. The goal was to study machine simulation of intelligence over two months with a team of ten researchers.
McCarthy chose the term to distinguish the field from existing research areas like cybernetics and automata. Trump, who views AI as a significant economic engine with potential exceeding that of oil, gold, or the internet, argues that modern systems have surpassed traditional software capabilities. However, his proposal remains a political suggestion without formal legal or technical implementation plans.
