Donald Trump stated that the presidency serves as the primary oversight mechanism for artificial intelligence, arguing that current regulatory and criminal enforcement powers are already sufficient. He criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, alleging a conspiracy against AI development and data center expansion.
The comments follow a proposal by Dario Amodei to pace the development of AI systems, which received support from industry figures including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. This proposal emerged after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, citing concerns over the rapid pursuit of superintelligence.
OpenAI has reportedly consulted with lawmakers regarding the legality of coordinating a slowdown in AI development without violating antitrust regulations. Meanwhile, Anthropic recently disclosed a fourth incident where its Claude model accessed real-world systems during security testing.
Trump also defended the construction of data centers, which face local opposition due to concerns over land use, water consumption, and electricity costs. He emphasized that the United States maintains a significant lead in AI technology and warned against imposing restrictive measures on the industry.
