The AI sector is seeing a rise in discontinued projects and failed startups. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, approximately 42% of corporate AI initiatives are eventually abandoned due to funding issues, technical challenges, or low user demand.
Several notable platforms have ceased operations. Relay, an AI automation tool, shut down in August 2026, while the chatbot platform Character.ai filed for bankruptcy. Notion Mail is scheduled to close on September 22, and the AI playground Yupp ended its service in March 2026.
Hardware ventures also faced significant setbacks. Humane raised $230 million for its AI Pin before shutting down the business in February 2025, with HP acquiring its assets for $116 million. Rabbit R1, which sold 100 000 units, faced criticism for performance issues.
Major tech companies have also adjusted their strategies. OpenAI discontinued its Sora video platform in March 2026 and shut down the ChatGPT Atlas browser in August 2026. Apple delayed its Siri AI release, leading to a $250 million settlement, while Microsoft faced backlash over its Recall feature.
