The Federal Aviation Administration launched the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program in Texas. This initiative involves eight state-led projects designed to test electric, hybrid-electric, and autonomous aircraft before final regulations are established.
The initial phase features companies Joby, Beta, and Wisk. During the week-long trial, these firms will perform test flights between cities and regional hubs, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. No passengers will be on board during these demonstrations.
The program aims to gather data for future certification, which is mandatory for commercial passenger operations in the US. The White House intends to use these findings to develop safety regulations for the industry. Further tests are scheduled in New York, Utah, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, and New Mexico.
The sector faces several challenges, including ongoing legal disputes between Joby and Archer regarding trade secrets and corporate espionage. Additionally, technical constraints such as battery weight and sensor performance remain significant hurdles for the widespread rollout of these aircraft.
