Tencent Holdings Ltd. is reportedly preparing an offshore bond sale of up to $5 billion. The company intends to use the proceeds to fund capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence, including data centers and computing hardware. The notes are expected to be issued in both US dollars and offshore yuan, with pricing potentially occurring as early as October 2026.
This move follows a dual-currency bond deal completed by the company in June 2026, which raised between $4.66 billion and $4.7 billion. That transaction represented the largest bond sale for the firm since 2020. Tencent currently holds approximately $22 billion in outstanding offshore notes and reports no major debt maturities in the near term.
The company's investment in AI infrastructure has grown significantly, with capital expenditures in this sector rising 176% year-over-year in the June 2026 quarter, reaching ¥52.8 billion or $7.9 billion. Additionally, Tencent has secured a five-year lease agreement with Oracle for approximately 100,000 advanced AI chips, a deal valued at around $7 billion.
Tencent is competing with domestic rivals such as ByteDance and Alibaba in the AI space. The broader market trend shows significant debt issuance for AI initiatives, with global corporate debt related to the sector exceeding $575 billion in 2026. For instance, SoftBank raised approximately $11.1 billion in September 2026 to support its own AI projects.
