Google DeepMind, Meta Platforms, and Isomorphic Labs have pledged an additional $300 million to the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub’s Virtual Biology Initiative. This investment, announced on October 7, 2026, increases the program's total funding to $1.8 billion. The initiative, which launched in April 2026 with an initial $500 million, aims to address the shortage of biological data required for training advanced AI models.
The project involves significant federal support. The US Department of Energy is allocating more than $500 million over five years for computational and modeling work. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health will coordinate existing datasets that have previously received over $500 million in federal funding. The initiative seeks to generate open datasets detailing cellular responses to various perturbations.
The program follows an open science model, though commercial partners may be granted embargo periods before data is released to the public. Researchers aim to increase cellular data points from the current hundreds of millions to billions or trillions. The first dataset is expected in approximately one year, with the goal of developing accurate virtual cell models within five years.
The primary objective of the initiative is to accelerate drug development, potentially reducing timelines from decades to approximately five years. Success will be measured by the delivery of the initial dataset, the scaling of data points, and the ability of virtual cell models to influence real-world drug development decisions within the five-year timeframe.
