The T3 Financial Crime Unit, founded in September 2024 by Tron, Tether, and TRM Labs, has officially ceased operations. Binance joined the initiative in 2025. According to reports, the program faced internal coordination issues and slow response times over the past year.
During its tenure, the T3 initiative collaborated with law enforcement agencies to freeze illicit assets. By February 2025, the unit had blocked over $300 million in tainted funds, with total figures reaching $250 million in reports from later that year.
Following the shutdown, the involved parties are pivoting to new strategies. Tron plans to announce a new anti-illicit activity initiative. Tether continues to work with TRM Labs through the Beacon Network, a real-time intelligence sharing system launched in August 2025.
Tether also launched the Financial Access and Systemic Empowerment Foundation in October 2025. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated the organization aims to educate and protect users from financial crimes. TRM Labs, which raised $70 million in a Series C round in February, maintains its focus on disrupting illicit crypto activity.
