The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has authorized the country's first spot Bitcoin ETF specifically for retail investors. To facilitate this approval, the regulator granted an exemption from its standard diversification requirements, which typically mandate that public funds distribute assets across multiple holdings.

The issuer behind the fund is Zurich-based BIT Asset Management. The firm plans to list the product on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November under the ticker symbol BBIT. While the company has not yet disclosed details regarding fees, the custodian, or retail distribution partners, it is positioning the fund as the only spot Bitcoin ETF in Europe.

FINMA justified the regulatory waiver by highlighting Bitcoin's extensive trading history and high liquidity compared to other digital assets. This decision marks a shift from the regulator's 2021 approval of a crypto basket fund, which was restricted solely to qualified investors. Existing physically backed Bitcoin ETPs in Switzerland are classified as debt-like securities rather than funds under collective investment law.

Under the current regulatory framework, firms must adhere to guidelines published on January 12, 2026, concerning custody and operational risk management. Sellers are also required to comply with the Financial Services Act (FinSA), which mandates suitability checks and volatility warnings for potential buyers. FINMA explicitly cautioned that investments in the new ETF remain highly risky.
