Mysten Labs has successfully processed the first native quantum-safe transaction on the Sui development network. This milestone was achieved on October 12, 2026, with the release of devnet-v1.82.0, which corresponds to protocol version 139. The update introduces ML-DSA-65 as a native account signature type, registered in the codebase as SignatureScheme::MLDSA65 = 7.
The ML-DSA-65 scheme is standardized by NIST under FIPS 204 and provides Level 3 security for standard user wallets. For high-value Move smart contract vaults, the network will utilize a separate tool, SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s. Both methods are NIST-approved and originate from different mathematical families to ensure robust protection against potential vulnerabilities.
The transition to quantum-safe accounts is optional for users. Existing 32-byte seeds, recovery phrases, and addresses remain valid, allowing users to rotate keys without creating new accounts. The project is led by Mysten co-founders Kostas Chalkias and Adeniyi Abiodun as part of a quantum readiness strategy established in August 2026.
The roadmap includes deploying quantum-safe vaults using SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s to the mainnet in 2026. Native support for ML-DSA-65 accounts on the mainnet is currently targeted for Q1 2027, subject to successful security audits and feedback from the testnet environment.
