Raw sugar futures have risen by approximately 20% in 2026, outperforming Bitcoin, gold, and the S&P 500. In August alone, the contract increased by 21.5%, marking its most significant monthly growth since October 2010. The FAO Sugar Price Index reached 106.4 points in August, an 11.9% increase from July and the highest level since June 2025.

Supply constraints drive the price surge. The European Commission forecasts a 19% decline in EU output to 13.4 million metric tons for the 2026/27 season. Analysts at Citi project a global deficit of 1.3 million tons, while Green Pool Commodity Specialists estimate a shortfall of 3.2 million tons. Adverse weather, including heat and drought, has impacted sugarbeet yields in the EU and production in Brazil and Asia.

India’s decision to implement duty-free raw sugar imports has further tightened international supply. Additionally, rising crude oil prices, currently exceeding $90 per barrel, incentivize producers to divert sugarcane toward ethanol production rather than sugar exports. Citi maintains a bullish outlook, predicting prices will reach 19 cents per pound within the next quarter.

In comparison, Bitcoin trades near $79,800, remaining 8.8% lower for the year despite a 25% gain in August. Gold has risen 1.7% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 has climbed nearly 13%. Sugar remains the top-performing asset among these categories in 2026, supported by shrinking global inventories and ongoing climate-related production challenges.
