Subaru is set to discontinue all combustion engine vehicles in the European market by 2028. The transition begins this year with the removal of the first model from showrooms. The company cites strict EU CO2 emission standards and costly safety system regulations as the primary drivers for this strategic shift, deeming further adaptations of internal combustion engines economically unviable.

The phase-out schedule includes the withdrawal of the Subaru Outback in 2026, followed by the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester in 2027. The brand's remaining European lineup will focus on electric vehicles, including the Uncharted, the Solterra crossover, and the e-Outback estate. The importer Emil Frey reports positive demand for the current electric offerings.

Looking ahead, Subaru is developing a proprietary electric vehicle platform to reduce reliance on Toyota. This new architecture will feature compact Aisin motors and Panasonic batteries, targeting a system output of approximately 375 kW for all-wheel drive models. The platform is scheduled to debut in production vehicles by 2029.

While a seven-seater flagship, the Subaru Getaway, has been announced for the US and Australian markets, there are currently no plans for its European release. However, the company may introduce additional electric models to the region before the 2028 deadline to maintain its market presence.
