Fiat is developing a new electric city car named Koala, which is scheduled for a 2028 market launch. The vehicle will share a platform with the new Citroën 2CV and is expected to be manufactured at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant near Naples.
The Koala will be positioned as an additional model alongside the existing combustion-engine Panda, which will remain in production until at least 2027. Fiat has officially trademarked the Koala name to distinguish its new electric offering from the traditional Panda line.
The vehicle is being designed for the proposed M1E-class, which limits length to 4.20 metres for cars built in Europe. Reports suggest the Koala will be under four metres long and weigh approximately one tonne, mirroring the specifications of the Citroën 2CV.
While official technical details remain unconfirmed, industry estimates suggest the car may feature batteries with capacities between 25 and 35 kilowatt-hours, potentially offering a range of 200 to 300 kilometres. The entry price is rumoured to be around €15 000.
Fiat is focusing on a new design direction for the Koala, moving away from neo-retro aesthetics. The company has drawn inspiration from a recent internal design competition involving Italian students, which produced concepts like the Ippo.
