BMW is developing a new gasoline-powered M3 sports sedan, with a market launch scheduled for 2028. The vehicle will feature an updated version of the company's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, known as the S58.

To comply with stricter emissions regulations, the automaker is considering integrating a 48-volt mild-hybrid system into the powertrain. This approach avoids the heavier plug-in hybrid setup currently used in other models.

The new M3 may transition to a standard all-wheel-drive configuration, potentially removing rear-wheel-drive and manual transmission options from the lineup. Styling will closely mirror the upcoming electric M3 variant.

BMW plans to release both sedan and wagon versions of the next-generation M3. The company has indicated that the pricing for the electric and gasoline models will be in the same range, likely starting near $90,000.
