The Stellar Development Foundation has introduced Project Thruput, a new network architecture designed to operate without transaction fees. Early performance testing of the system demonstrated a capacity of 7.02 million payments per second.

This benchmark result was achieved by utilizing eight machines within a single validator, marking a significant increase from the 1.18 million payments per second recorded on a single machine setup.

The testing focused on the core execution engine, specifically evaluating signature verification and block processing capabilities. The system manages concurrent transactions that access identical data without employing state sharding.

While the project eliminates per-transaction fees, it maintains gas limits to manage network load. If demand surpasses capacity, transaction priority is determined by the unlocked native token balances of the accounts.

Project Thruput is currently available as a technology preview on the FutureNet environment. The Stellar Development Foundation has provided public access to the project's code and documentation but has not clarified its future integration with the existing Stellar network.
