Starlink has launched its satellite mobile service in Brazil through a partnership with the local operator Vivo. The initiative aims to provide connectivity to approximately 50 million users residing in areas currently lacking traditional cellular coverage.
The service utilizes the Starlink Mobile Direct to Cell technology, which enables compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites acting as orbital base stations. This eliminates the need for specialized hardware or external antennas for users in remote locations.
The system currently supports 7 million smartphones. The coverage area includes remote rainforest regions, fishing villages, and major highway networks, ensuring nationwide connectivity across Brazil.
As of late October 2026, the SpaceX satellite constellation consists of approximately 11 170 units, with over 11 150 currently operational. The company plans to deploy V2 generation satellites to enhance bandwidth and transition from basic messaging to high-speed mobile internet.
