Spotify has launched a native in-car application built for Google’s Android Automotive operating system. The app is currently available in select Audi models, including the A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A5, Q5, and A6. This release marks a shift from template-based integrations to a fully custom interface.
The application runs directly on the vehicle's hardware, removing the need for phone tethering or Bluetooth connections. According to Spotify, 34 percent of its monthly active users and 77 percent of Premium subscribers stream music in their cars, making the in-car experience a priority.
Unlike previous 'headless' integrations that relied on Google’s UI templates, the new app allows Spotify to control the entire user interface. Development of the project took just over a year. The app includes features like QR code-based 'Spotify Jam' sessions and support for secondary passenger displays.
While Spotify remains committed to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the company aims to offer an alternative that avoids common connectivity issues. By using a standard Android Automotive APK, Spotify plans to distribute the app through various channels, including the Google Play Store and automaker-specific stores.
