The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted SpaceX a Section 214 international license for its Starlink Mobile service. This regulatory approval enables the company to operate as a telecommunications carrier for traffic routed between the United States and foreign destinations.
Previously, SpaceX was authorized to develop Starlink Mobile only within the US. The new license removes legal restrictions on international traffic routing, establishing the necessary framework for the service to expand beyond American borders.
Despite the regulatory milestone, SpaceX has not announced a specific launch date for international commercial operations. The license serves as a prerequisite for global expansion rather than a timeline for immediate service availability.
Industry participants, including T-Mobile, have noted that satellite connectivity is intended to complement terrestrial networks rather than replace them. Concerns regarding signal penetration in buildings and bandwidth limitations remain key factors in the service's deployment.
