SpaceX has transported Ship 41 to the launch site for integration with Booster 21. This assembly will form the vehicle for the upcoming Flight 14 mission, which is tentatively scheduled for launch no earlier than September 28, subject to regulatory approval.
A notable feature of Ship 41 is the inclusion of two thermal protection tiles salvaged from Ship 40, which flew during Flight 13. This marks the first instance of reusing Starship heat shield hardware. The tiles are installed on the aft end of the ship near the flaps.
Ship 40 successfully completed a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean on July 24 following its flight. The vehicle remained intact for 24 days before being recovered by the heavy-lift vessel Forte and returned to Starbase. This recovery provided extensive data on heat shield performance.
Engineers utilized findings from the inspection of Ship 40 to implement design changes on Ship 41. These updates include modifications to retention hardware and the use of curved tiles to optimize airflow and plasma paths, aiming to reduce the risk of tile loss during ascent and reentry.
Flight 14 is intended to be the first orbital attempt for the Starship program. The mission profile includes a multi-hour coast phase, the deployment of Starlink V3 satellites, and a planned splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
