SpaceX is evaluating the potential to manufacture its own fiber-optic equipment. This initiative aims to support the Starlink network and future computing infrastructure, following the company's established strategy of vertical integration used in its aerospace division.

Currently, the company relies on external suppliers for fiber-optic products. Key partners include the American firm Corning, as well as the Chinese manufacturers Hengtong and YOFC. SpaceX is specifically focusing on optical transceivers, which are essential for converting electrical signals into optical data within data centers and telecommunications networks.

The shift toward internal production may be driven by geopolitical tensions between the United States and China. Increased regulatory scrutiny over Chinese networking hardware poses supply chain risks for American companies. This becomes particularly significant as SpaceX plans to expand its investments in artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.

Vertical integration has been a cornerstone of the company's operations in rocket manufacturing. SpaceX already produces its own Merlin engines for the Falcon 9 and Raptor engines for the Starship launch vehicle. The Starship program demonstrates an even higher level of internal component production compared to previous projects.
