Sony is expanding its PlayStation 5 Digital Edition lineup in Japan with a new Midnight Black colorway. The console, identified as model CFI-2200B02S, will be available for purchase starting November 19 at a price of ¥55 000, which includes tax. Pre-orders for the device are scheduled to begin on October 20 through authorized retailers and online platforms within the country.
The new model maintains the same regional restrictions as previous Japan-exclusive versions. The system language is locked to Japanese, and the console is compatible only with PlayStation accounts registered in Japan. These limitations are intended to prevent the export of the units, which are priced significantly lower than the standard Digital Edition models currently sold in other international markets.
Alongside the console, Sony will release a matching Midnight Black disc drive on November 19, priced at ¥11 980. The company also reiterated its long-term strategy regarding physical media, confirming that all new PlayStation games will be released exclusively in digital format starting from January 2028, despite the continued availability of hardware accessories for physical discs.
